This is a fully online class. There are no in-person meetings.

Have you started a memoir, but you just don’t know where to go? Do you want to take your memoir writing skills to the next level? This class will go into more than just the basics of memoir writing. Topics will include: using an objective correlative, building characterizations, using sensory imagery, creating a narrative arc, revising, and more. If you have already started writing and are looking for some direction, then this is the class for you! You do not have to be working on a book-length memoir. All you need are some interesting stories to tell that you are ready to shape into a literary format that others can appreciate. The best memoirs are not necessarily great because of the interesting experience that you are relating, but because they are written so that others can see and participate in the experience along with you.

Memoir Writing Basics I

Have you ever been told you should write a memoir? Have you thought about writing your stories, but don’t know how to start? If you’ve always wanted to get started writing your memoir, but didn’t know where to begin, then this is the class for you. You do not have to have a book project in mind, just some interesting stories that you would like to tell. In this class, we will read some examples of good memoirs, discuss what made them good, and write some memoirs of our own. You will have a weekly writing prompt to get you started. You will also have the chance to collaborate with the other writers in the class to give and receive feedback. You will learn how to revise your memoir for concision. By the end of the session, you should have the tools you need to continue on your own. Participants may choose to continue with Memoir Writing Basics II.
